The Bared Belly

The Bared Belly

"A wild, fiercely independent cat and a gentle indoor cat formed an unlikely bond. When the wild cat finally lay down and exposed its soft underbelly, the indoor cat did not scratch it, but began to groom it. The wild cat learned that true trust is voluntarily offering the power to hurt you, and finding it met with care."

Control & Trust

Bramble was a creature of the alleys, sharp-edged, quick, and always on guard. His life was a constant negotiation of power—who was bigger, who was faster, who struck first. He trusted no one. Then he met Luna, a gentle house cat who observed him from a garden wall. Over weeks of cautious interaction, a fragile truce formed. They would sit near each other, always maintaining a wary distance. Bramble’s muscles were perpetually coiled, ready to spring or strike if she moved too suddenly. Then came a day when exhaustion overtook him. He had fought a hard battle to secure a meal, and his body was aching. As he lay down near Luna, a feeling of deep peace, unfamiliar and terrifying, washed over him. Slow and deliberate, he rolled onto his back, exposing his soft, undefended underbelly—the most vulnerable part of any feline. To bare it is to hand over the power of life and death. He held his breath, instinctively waiting for an attack. Instead, Luna slowly extended a paw, not with claws unsheathed, but with a gentle touch. She leaned down and began to softly groom his ruffled fur. In that moment of profound vulnerability, Bramble realized he had given up control and found not submission, but an unshakable bond of trust.
